Scenario · 10 min

The Shop Floor

It's a Saturday afternoon. You're 16, in a clothing store with a friend, trying things on. As you walk toward the exit, a staff member steps in front of you and says they saw you put something in your bag.

What you’ll practise

  • What theft actually means, and what has to be proved
  • What a shop can and can't do, compared with police
  • When you have to give your name and address

Before you start

This scenario involves an accusation of theft, a request from store staff (not police) to look in your bag, the possibility of being physically stopped at the door, and — on one path — police attending, an arrest and a police interview. No violence is depicted and no injuries are described. Nothing in this scenario establishes that you did anything.
